This super-easy vegan sour cream sauce, or 'crema' for tacos, enchiladas, burritos or other typical sour cream uses, is my absolute favorite whole-food solution to replacing dairy or even the vegan store items full of weird stuff. The two main ingredients, raw tahini and lime juice, offset each other to bring that sour tangy taste, with the creaminess that tahini blends down to.
Yes, there's also a tahini note to it, but who doesn't love a good tahini dressing anyway? Tahini, made purely from ground sesame seeds is a great vegan source for calcium, too. Feel great about dressing your tacos or baked potatoes with this sauce! Made from whole foods; no junky ingredients. Do use "raw" sesame tahini and not roasted (check the ingredients). The raw tahini has a lighter flavor and will give your finished sauce a whiter color.
When living in San Diego, I became obsessed with tacos and every good taco stand includes a salsa bar. Among the various salsas to choose from, there usually sits a chipotle sour cream (or crema), and a cilantro-lime sour cream (or crema). I've included both those variations here for additional vegan sour cream options.
FODMAPs: Tahini is a low-FODMAP food in amounts up to 2 tablespoons. That makes this sauce low-FODMAP up to at least 4 tablespoons due to it's ingredient dilution. Chipotle in adobo is not typically low-FODMAP, but you can use some chipotle powder instead (without added garlic). The result is a little different, but still achieves a great taste.
